At Imaginarium of Technology (iMT) we seek to be the first to conceive, capture and refine the visions of future technologies and innovative directions. We seek to communicate ideas, solutions, and technologies at and beyond the cutting edge. This season we wanted to brainstorm and envision the future of our cities and transportation within them considering airborne vehicles. Therefore, we sat down with our board member engineers and board members artists to deeply explore this topic. The results were exhibited in MIT members week in october 2017. Since these ideas and illustrations are currently private and not open to the public, we wanted to expand this topic to public and engage innovators and designers from around the world and recognize their brilliance.

This brought us in a strong synergy with NASA, an organization that pushes on the boundaries of mankind explorations and aviation technologies. The iMT-NASA concept challenge on “Intracity Airborne Transportation” provided the opportunity to communicate and discuss different visions of how the future airborne transportation may look like. Our judges; Dr. Omar Hatamleh Chief Innovation Officer at NASA JSC, Dr. Barmak Heshmat Research Scientist at MIT and founder of the Imaginarium, and Rodrigo Galdino Senior Designer at Karma Automotive and previous designer at Audi have voted unanimously of the following idea illustrations to be recognized as the winners of the iMT-NASA challenge on Intracity Airborne Transportation.

Without further ado our winners of 2017 “Intracity Airborne Transportation” concept design challenge are:
At the third place Luiz Veiga from Brazil with the idea of “Hybrid Helium Drone”. (Score 16/30) Luizs illustration is composed of 4 sketches that explain how helium balloons can be used to assist human carrying drones.
Rodrigo Galdino of Karma Automotives comments: “Very nice sketches! Reminds me somehow of Joe Johnston's sketches from the original Star Wars trilogy. The proposals shows a deep knowledge of vehicle architecture that Mr. Veiga has. Another Interesting idea is the bigger airdrome deploying the small ones”. Barmak Heshmat from MIT says: “Interesting idea, the illustration could be better. One problem with helium containers is that they leak out and the big surface area they make will cause a lot of drag. But I like the creativity here.”
After our creative third placer the winner at the second place is Brayn Liu from USA, with the idea of “Personal VTOL sports Vehicle”. (Score 20/30)
Bryans entry is composed of 10 visuals with several concept sketches to show the way the design works. The illustration explains a vertical takeoff and landing vehicle that has foldable wings and gimballed propellers which can also be used as wheels.
Dr. Hatamleh of NASA comments; “The design is beautiful, I like it, but It seems to me that this would need a runway to take off and there is not much details on that.”, Rodrigo adds: “Nice renderings and neat presentation! Great work! He could explore a little bit more shape and graphics but it's a mature view of the business! Nice design overall”.
And Finally at the first place stands Charlie Angulo from USA with the idea of “Single Passenger Drone”. (Score 23/30) The entry is composed of 4 cinematic renders and one sketch. What brings this submission to the top of our finalists among all other ideas in this competition is practicality, style, and stunning visualizations of the design.
Dr. Hatamleh of NASA says: “This is an impressive design, really outstanding, and there has been testing drones like this. The disadvantage I see with this is that it only has one passenger seat which would be inefficient. ” Dr. Heshmat also has praised this design and adds: “Very sleek design, If the propellers were gimballed this would be a logical design. I like how the designer is exploring different scenarios with his idea.” Finally Mr. Galdino of Karma Automotives says: ”Beautiful work! Clean and neat illustrations which enriches the presentation along with the orthographic views. Very simple shapes but it has presence!, Considering it is a single seater, could be thinner from top view.”
These winning illustrations and their artists and ideators have been featured in the NASA cross industry innovation summit (video here). The winners will be gifted by the Imaginarium of Technology with a token of recognition and appreciations which will be mailed to them. The winning illustrations will also be featured in Engineering Eye video series of iMT.
